Das Ornament gewinnt gegenwärtig in der Architektur einen neuen Stellenwert. Innovative Technologien des Entwerfens und der digitalen Bauteilproduktion verändern seine Rolle redikal, indem sie die expressiven Formen des Ornaments in Beziehung zur konstruktiven Logis eines Bauwerks setzen. Damit eröffnet sich eine Fülle von neuen Interaktionsmöglichkeiten zwischen Funktion und Dekor, Bau und Oberfläche, Tragwerk und Hülle.Das Buch stellt in einem systematischen Überblick die Verfahren und Strategien der Herstellung und Verwendung des Ornaments dar und beschreibt realisierte Beispiele aus der internationalen Gegenwartsarchitektur. Darüber hinaus schildern und analysieren drei Architekten mit besonderer Expertise auf dem Gebiet des avancierten Ornaments ihre Erfahrungen: Sam Jacob von Fashion Architecture Taste, London, Andreas Hild von Hild und K Architekten, München, und Alejandro Zaera-Polo von Foreign Office Architects, London. Ornament is currently acquiring a renewed status in architecture. As contemporary technologies of design and fabrication introduce unprecedented opportunities to intertwine the constructive logics and expressive articulations of buildings, ornament has re-emerged as a means to explore the interactions between function and decoration, volume and surface, structure and envelope. This book gives a systematic account of the technologies employed in the production of ornament and the strategies of its application today, examining a range of international built examples. Architects with particularly advanced approaches to the question of ornament contribute reports and reflections on their experiences: Sam Jacob of Fashion Architecture Taste (FAT), London; Andreas Hild of Hild und K Architekten, Munich; and Alejandro Zaera-Polo of Foreign Office Architects (FOA), London.

The purpose of this book is to present the Hekatompedon Inscription at Athens ( IG I³ 4) as a major monument of Greek art, legitimately on a par with more famous landmarks of the Greek aesthetic tradition like the Parthenon Frieze. Inscribed most probably in the middle of the decade that saw the Greek response to the Persian invasion, the Hekatompedon Inscription has long been recognized for its historical and religious importance. This study looks at the inscription on its own terms: the unique fusion of its visual and textual content in that most Greek of epigraphical layouts, the stoikhedon style. Such an approach leads to the question of origins: where and why was the stoikhedon style formulated and where does the Hekatompedon Inscription stand in that development? Egypt’s influential system of proportions and use of grids will be considered determinative for the very first time.

The church of San Marco of Venice has long played a central role in Venetian political, ceremonial, and religious life. Its renowned assemblage of mosaics, sculpture, metalwork, and reliquaries are, in origin, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, or Venetian imitation of Byzantine designs. In San Marco, Byzantium, and the Myths of Venice, the authors assess the significance of the embellishment of the church and its immediate surroundings, especially during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when most of the Byzantine material was acquired, largely from Constantinople. The church and its decoration are studied in relation to Venice’s interests abroad and on mainland Italy. The authors address the diverse styles, sources, meanings, and significance of this art, both individually and as an ensemble. Building upon developments in scholarship since Otto Demus’s masterly studies of the church, the book offers new insights into the inspiration, purposes, and mutability of San Marco and the myths that inspired and motivated Venetians.
